Mesopotamia was one of history's earliest civilizations. Mesopotamia means "land between the rivers," and refers to the area between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.  It was in this region that people abandoned their nomadic lifestyle and began to form permanent settlements.  It is within these settlements that the Mesopotamians would affect the course of human history.  Codified laws, the concept of kingship, the building of places of worship, writing and the wheel are the lasting legacies of Mesopotamia.
